Nathalie Emmanuel
Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel(born 2 March 1989) is an English actress. Emmanuel started her stage career in the latter part of the 1990s. She was featured in parts in West End musicals like The Lion King. Her acting career began in 2006 on Sasha Valentine, a soap opera. Then, she was cast in several British television shows which included the sequel Maze Runner. Her mother is Dominican, as is her father, who is of half-Saint Lucian and half English descent. She has a younger sister. Emmanuel remembers her mother's first notice of her passion for acting and the desire to be an actress when she was a student at St Hilda's School. This school was closed in 2014 and became the Westcliff High School. In an interview with New York Daily News, she explained, "When my mom was three, she was always causing drama. So she decided that maybe I could channel that properly--so I started learning to act, sing, and dancing classes." At the age of 10, she played Young Nala in the West End's version of The Lion King. Then she was chosen to play Missandei in HBO's fantasy-based drama series Game of Thrones. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, she confirmed that she received the news that she had been cast in the role, while she was employed in a clothing shop as a shop assistant. In the year 2015, Emmanuel was promoted to a regular cast member in the series. Missandei was the sole prominent person who was a woman of colour in the show, and her death scene, which took place while she was in chains was unpopular with fans and was viewed as an example of fridging and evoking the image of slavery.Emmanuel was later quoted by The Guardian: The reaction to Missandei's death was so large because she was the only one. I think a lot of those who felt disenfranchised or marginalized were influenced by her or felt that she represented them particularly women of colour. Many were hurt when she died, and it was tragic in the way it happened. This is how they're going make the sole woman of colour
